Fall Planning: A Garden City Beach Guide
By late August, we start hearing the same question from guests: is the fall still a good time to visit? Every year, our answer is the same. Absolutely, Yes. He’s a secret; it’s one of our favorite times at the beach and we’re sharing some of our favorite ways to plan your trip.
Summer is when the coast is at its liveliest: full beach days, packed patios, that energy that makes a July trip feel like a celebration. September and October are a different chapter of the same season. Kids are back in school and the pace eases. The Atlantic hangs onto its summer warmth well into September and into the early part of October. Swimming stays comfortable for most of that stretch, though the water cools some by late October.
Humidity backs off some too. Mornings feel lighter. Late afternoon walks on the ocean are the perfect time to look for dolphins,, and by October you'll want a light layer for the evenings.
Things to Do:
If you're building a September trip around Garden City Beach or Murrells Inlet, put the Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival on your radar. It runs Friday through Sunday, September 25 to 27, 2026, at Huntington Beach State Park, a short drive from both properties. More than 100 artisans, live music, food, all set against Atalaya Castle, the historic winter home of sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington. Past years have listed adult admission around $10, with kids 15 and under free and park admission waived during the festival. Pricing and hours shift year to year though, so confirm on the South Carolina Parks official Atalaya Festival page before you go.
October has its own draw. Brookgreen Gardens hosts its Harvest Home Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, 2026, with a pumpkin patch, scarecrow building, and live music, included with garden admission. Confirm hours on the official Brookgreen Gardens events page before you plan around it. Later in the month, the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk turns festive for Halloween, with trick-or-treating and costume contests along the boardwalk on October 31.
Most restaurants, shops, and attractions along the Grand Strand stay open right through fall, just at a more relaxed pace. Golfers, take note. The courses tend to play at their best this time of year: cooler mornings, off season rates.
